Evidence authentication

Every piece of evidence uploaded to Family Evidence is cryptographically authenticated to establish integrity and admissibility.

What happens on upload

  1. SHA-256 hash: A unique digital fingerprint is generated
  2. NTP timestamp: Server time is recorded from trusted time servers
  3. Metadata extraction: EXIF data, file properties preserved
  4. Audit log entry: Upload event recorded with user details
Understanding SHA-256 hashes

A SHA-256 hash is a 64-character code unique to your file. Even a single pixel change creates a completely different hash. This proves the file hasn't been altered since upload.

Authentication certificates

Each piece of evidence can generate a certificate of authenticity that includes:

  • SHA-256 hash value
  • NTP-verified upload timestamp
  • Original filename and file size
  • Uploader identity and device info
  • Chain of custody summary

Organizing evidence

Keep your evidence organized for easy retrieval and professional exports.

Categories

Assign categories to classify evidence types:

  • Photos: Images of incidents, conditions, people
  • Screenshots: Text messages, social media, emails
  • Videos: Recordings of incidents or conditions
  • Audio: Voicemails, recordings
  • Documents: Agreements, records, correspondence
  • Financial: Bank statements, receipts, invoices
  • Medical: Records, prescriptions, reports
  • Other: Anything that doesn't fit above

Tags

Create custom tags for your workflow. Examples:

  • Custody exchange
  • Property condition
  • Harassment
  • Key exhibit

Filtering and searching

Find evidence quickly using:

  • Search: By description, filename, or content
  • Date range: Filter by evidence date or upload date
  • Category/tag: Filter by classification
  • Uploader: Filter by who uploaded

Chain of custody

Family Evidence maintains a complete, immutable chain of custody for every piece of evidence.

What's tracked

Every action is logged with:

  • Timestamp: NTP-verified server time
  • User: Who performed the action
  • Action: What was done (upload, view, download, export)
  • IP address: Network origin
  • Device: Browser/app and operating system
