Security and privacy
How secure is my data?
Family Evidence uses bank-grade security: AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit, SOC 2 Type II certified infrastructure, and US-based data centers. All access is logged and auditable.
Is Family Evidence HIPAA compliant?
Yes. We maintain HIPAA-compliant infrastructure and can sign Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) for organizations that require them. Contact us for details.
Who can see my evidence?
Only users you explicitly grant access to can view case evidence. Clients can only see their own uploads unless you grant broader access. Our staff never access client data except for technical support with your permission.
Can evidence be edited or deleted?
No. Once uploaded, evidence files are immutable — they cannot be modified or deleted. This is essential for maintaining chain of custody and court admissibility. Metadata (descriptions, tags) can be edited, and changes are tracked.
Evidence authentication
What is SHA-256 hashing?
SHA-256 creates a unique 64-character "fingerprint" of each file. If even one bit of the file changes, the hash becomes completely different. This cryptographically proves the file hasn't been altered since upload.
How are timestamps verified?
We use NTP (Network Time Protocol) servers — the same technology that syncs clocks for financial institutions. Timestamps come from our servers, not client devices, ensuring accuracy and preventing manipulation.
Will courts accept this evidence?
Family Evidence is designed to meet Federal Rules of Evidence 901(b)(9) standards for electronic evidence authentication. Our methods are consistent with how major corporations and government agencies authenticate digital evidence.
What is chain of custody?
Chain of custody documents every action taken on evidence: who uploaded it, who viewed it, when it was exported, etc. This complete audit trail helps establish authenticity in legal proceedings.
Features and usage
What file types can I upload?
We support images (JPEG, PNG, HEIC, GIF), videos (MP4, MOV, AVI up to 2GB), audio (MP3, WAV, M4A), and documents (PDF, DOC/DOCX, TXT). If you need a format not listed, contact support.
Is there a file size limit?
Individual files can be up to 2GB. Total storage depends on your plan: 10GB (Solo), 100GB (Firm), or unlimited (Enterprise).
Does the mobile app work offline?
Yes. Evidence captured offline is stored securely on the device with local hashing. When connection is restored, it syncs automatically with full authentication.
Can I export evidence for court?
Yes. Generate professional export packets with Bates numbering, authentication certificates, and chain of custody reports. Exports are compatible with major e-filing systems.
Accounts and teams
Can I add team members?
Yes. Firm plans include 5 team members; Enterprise is unlimited. Team members can have different roles (Admin, Attorney, Paralegal, Viewer) with appropriate permissions.
How do I invite clients?
Open a case, go to Participants, and click "Invite client." Enter their email, and they'll receive a secure link to join. Clients can upload evidence from web or mobile.
Can clients see all evidence?
By default, clients only see their own uploads. You can grant broader access if needed, but this is opt-in for privacy.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
You have 30 days after cancellation to export your data. Evidence is retained per our policy (minimum 7 years) but becomes inaccessible. You can reactivate anytime.
Billing and pricing
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Start with a 14-day free trial of any plan. No credit card required. After the trial, choose a plan or your account becomes read-only.
Can I change plans anytime?
Yes. Upgrade instantly (prorated charge) or downgrade at your next billing cycle. Make sure you're within the new plan's limits before downgrading.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Enterprise customers can pay by ACH or wire transfer.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes. Annual billing saves ~20% vs monthly. We also offer discounts for legal aid organizations and qualifying nonprofits. Contact us for details.
Mobile app
What devices are supported?
iOS 14+ (iPhone, iPad) and Android 10+. Download from the App Store or Google Play.
Can clients use the mobile app?
Yes. When you invite a client, they can download the app and access their case with the same credentials. It's designed to be intuitive for non-technical users.
Is evidence captured through the app authenticated?
Yes. Photos, videos, and audio captured in the app are hashed immediately at capture time, even offline. This provides stronger authentication than uploading existing files.
How do I troubleshoot sync issues?
Check your internet connection, ensure you have the latest app version, and try force-syncing from Settings. If issues persist, contact support with your device info.
